Last Sunday night, Memorial Day weekend, I was sitting at home and watching TV. The neighbors were having a party. They were out all evening, playing games, drinking, and hot tubbing. Hey, fine by me, have fun. About 12:30 A.M., they were still out hot tubbing and having a grand old time. Then they went inside (finally). Didn't have another thought about it.
I have a slight insomnia problem, so I was awake, reading online. My husband and dog went to bed. Then, about 2:00 AM, I start to hear loud conversations going on outside and some hootin' and hollerin'. I thought to myself, well they're probably going home. After about 15 minutes, I heard my husband get up, because they had woke up my dog. Let me clarify--my dog is 13 years old and mostly deaf. I wanted to go out and just Bit** slap them. I held my temper and waited.
I went to my garage and had a smoke; its on the other side of the house from these particlular neighbors. Everything was closed up, and I could still hear every word they were saying/screaming.
When I came inside, I decided that I had to say something. I walked over and asked for the owner of the house to come talk to me. He stayed up on his deck and I heard many comments like "ooh, your in trouble now". I simply asked him to take his friends inside and that it was 2 o'clock in the morning. He sheepishly said, 'sorry" and they went inside.
What worries me now, is this: did I just cause a rift in the neighborly code? Will they see me/us as unfriendly? They've lived there for about a year, and we haven't had any confrontations--mostly we've helped them with several issues with house ownership, landscaping, and fixing mechanicals. Did I do the right thing, or did I just cause a huge problem?
